Six Months of Grinding: From Flailing on V2 to Sending V5

Six months ago, I walked back onto the mats feeling heavy, uncoordinated, and humbled. A steep V2 overhang left my forearms pumped into solid rock and my lower back aching for two days. Today, I clipped the top chains on my third V5 project.
Here is what changed, what failed, and what actually mattered along the way.
Month 1 & 2: The Humbling Phase
The early weeks were characterized by enthusiasm colliding with biological reality:
- The Pitfall: Trying to climb three days in a row like I was twenty-two. Result: mild tenderness in my right ring finger A2 pulley and deep tendon fatigue in the inner elbows.
- The Adjustment: Enforcing a strict 48-hour recovery window between climbing sessions. Replacing excessive wall time with low-impact mobility and antagonist wrist work.
Month 3 & 4: The Footwork Epiphany
By Month 3, I noticed that my fingers weren’t failing because they were weak; they were failing because my feet were terrible.
- I was over-gripping holds to compensate for lazy foot placements.
- I was letting my hips sag away from the wall on overhangs, shifting 80% of my bodyweight onto my hands.
- The Breakthrough: Committing the first 15 minutes of every session to the “Silent Feet” drill and deliberately practicing heel and toe hooks on steep terrain. Overnight, routes felt two grades easier without gaining any finger strength.
Month 5 & 6: Progressive Overload & Body Composition
With movement efficiency stabilized, physiological adaptations began to kick in:
- Body Weight: Dropped 14 pounds of excess weight simply by eliminating mindless late-night snacking and aligning protein intake with training days. Every pound lost was one less pound hanging from my fingers.
- Finger Recruitment: Introduced basic 20mm edge hangs (sub-maximal 10-second hangs at bodyweight) twice a week.
Three Takeaways for Anyone Restarting
- Don’t Rush the Grades: Chasing numbers before your connective tissue adapts is a fast ticket to an orthopedic clinic.
- Technique Over Hardware: A climber with crisp footwork will out-climb a strong gym bro who flails his legs every single time.
- Consistency Trumps Intensity: Three smart 45-minute sessions a week beating one massive weekend marathon that wrecks you for five days.
